July 9th was our first full day in France. The previous evening I had assembled the bike and was eager to test it out before L'etape in two days. Also excited to embark on a real climb.
Well before the trip I had planned & mapped out multiple routes to ride throughout the Cote d'Azur from our Apartment. My Garmin Edge 500 paired with bikeroutetoaster.com worked incredibly well as I had very little problems finding my way to and along the routes I had planned out despite never being here before and the complicated routes and confusing signage.
After about 2km as I headed north, the road pitched way way up and I was climbing a crazy steep hill well in excess of 10% grade about 500m or so long!
I wasn't sure what to expect here in France but I was definetly suprised by the steep climbing within the city limits. Awesome urban switchbacks made for interesting climbing and great views in different directions.
Riding through the city is awesome and I am loving it so far. Just seeing the street signs as I remember them from watching the tour on TV is great
Here I make a turn and very soon things get a lot more quiet as the actual climb approaches.
It doesn't look like much at the beginning, but it is pretty steep and just zig zags up the mountain to some kind of facility at the top. Near the top the road worsens as there are lots of small stones strewn all over the road. No problem going up but I make a note to take it easy (even more so) on the way down.
The start doesn't look like much
Partway up
And a little cloudy up top
Didn't like the descent from the top
This is a sample of the fast & tricky descent into the city of Nice
Apparently this ride is a 2nd Category Climb followed by a 1st category climb to the summit. The stats for the final climb to the summit are 6.5k @8.0% topping out at 830m
